From Fishing Cabin to a Legacy on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokee’s
In 1987, my grandparents - The Lively’s - purchased a small cabin on the waters edge on Paradise Point.
That little cabin became the backdrop for everything that mattered most - our grandparents generosity, long summer days on the water, fish fries, homemade ice cream and endless card games on the screened porch, and grandma’s chocolate gravy & biscuits. As the family grew, the screened porch became a sleeping porch by night with box fans humming under the Oklahoma stars.
Over time, we were able to purchase the land and build a larger cabin. And then, we purchased surround lots. Not for investment, but for preservation. Every closing felt like honoring the foundation my grandparents laid.
Then, one day, something completely unexpected happened… 115 acres became available nearby on Paradise Bluffs.
And we knew…
The bluff where we skied the waters below. Where my grandfather would pull us until the sun went down because the water was calmer there against those bluffs. Where we made our time last a wee bit longer due to the lingering sunsets.
We stepped out in faith and purchased it - not just to own land, but to steward something meaningful. It truly felt like a gift from our ancestors.
So now, we expand on the place that has always been so special and sacred to our family and friends…and build something others can experience too.
“The tradition of love, generosity, and gathering lives on here” In honor of Vernon and Wanda Lively
Where the Vision Began
The kind of view that lingers. The kind that turns the sky pinky-orange and stills the waters. It feels sacred. Standing on Paradise Bluffs overlooking Grand Lake O’ the Cherokee’s, we knew this land was meant for something more.
What started decades ago in a small fishing cabin and family vacations slowly grew into a vision: to build a place where others could gather, promise forever, and celebrate life’s most meaningful moments.
Breaking Ground on the Bluff
Breaking ground felt symbolic.
There’s something humbling about cutting into the untouched, sacred ground. The eagles soar here along the bluff lines. They raise their families in the tall trees on the cliffs edge.
The chapel would stand strong against wind, weather, and time.
First came the Cross
The day we erected the cross was the day our daughter said yes to her future husband.
The moment felt divinely orchestrated, the future of our family aligned with the future of this chapel.
It also gave direction to the orientation of the chapel structure. We spent many a sunset standing at the base of that cross, stepping out the foundation of the chapel.
The cross marks a beginning and a promise. It stands as a reminder that this place is built on faith, family, and the belief that covenant matters.
Every couple who stands beneath it becomes part of that story.
Designed for Golden Hour
The most important design element wasn’t inside the chapel. It was the sun. We positioned the structure to face westward. Every design decision has one purpose…to frame the horizon. To let the awe inspiring sunsets that linger take center stage.
At The Sunset Chapel, the golden hour isn’t an afterthought. It’s the centerpiece.
Materials that Tell a Story
Every material is being chosen with intention.
Natural textures to reflect the surrounding bluffs. Light, neutral tones to allow every vision to shine. Durable finishes that will withstand the test of time while maintaining warmth and elegance. Stone, stucco, steel, wood and marble will create a timeless, refined and elevated space that will seem as if its always been there.
The Legacy Package - More Than a Wedding Day
From the very beginning, The Sunset Chapel was never meant to be just a venue.
It was meant to hold legacy.
When the cross was raised on the very day our daughter said yes to forever, something shifted in us. We realized this structure would not simply hold ceremonies - it would mark generational moments. It would hold stories that ripple far beyond evenings.
That is why we are creating what we call “The Legacy Package” - for those who see their wedding as the beginning of a family story.
The package will include:
priority access to golden hour ceremony times
a private chapel session for anniversary photos in future years
a commemorative keepsake tied to the cross-raising story
a brick laid at the base of the cross inscribed with your name and wedding date
preferred booking privileges and discounts for future family celebrations
Years from now, when anniversaries are celebrated and children ask where it all began, they will be able to return to the same view, the same light, the same sacred space.
